Welcome to the New Majority

Every so often as I wander the internet, I come across a bit of information that causes me to stop and reassess the world and my place in it. I was reading an article this morning on the CNN site. It is a review of a new book on sexuality called "The Normal Bar."

The book presents statistics about the sexual habits of average people based upon an internet survey of 70,000 respondents. "That's interesting," I thought. Then I saw it.

86% of all men and women are intrigued by having kinky sex.

There it was in black and white. Even if this number is way off, this world has to be just full of spankos and those who quietly wish they could be. I recognize that (a) a casual curiosity is not the same as a lifelong interest and (b) not every kinky person likes spanking and (c) people who take internet surveys may not be a representative sample of the general population. Even so, eighty six percent is nothing less than shocking.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are definitely not alone.

I think this is something that many of us in the lifestyle community have cautiously thought all along. We are actually the majority not the minority!
Although it's not exactly a purely scientific study, this does present information that many more people are interested in in at least some "kink" then previously might have been considered.
I used to find it hard to believe, but I used to read and hear that about 10% were interested, lets welcome the new 76% that have come aboard recently! lol

Maybe ... 86% admit they are intrigued by kinky sex. The other 14% are intrigued, but are too embarrassed to admit it. ;-)

Pretty cool stat anyway - thanks for sharing Bonnie!

"Lies, damned lies and statistics" (sometimes attributed to Mark Twain) I think sums this up. Without context and given the highly unspecific question I'm pretty sure that this is just another meaningless figure. These sort of statistics are generally just used to promote something whether it's a book or a study. Whilst I'm sure there are a lot of kinky people out there 86% sounds and awfully high number.

Bonnie,

Thank you for sharing. TV and the movies are filled with kinky play. I would imagine that the majority of couples have tried some form of kinky sex.

Wow, thanks for sharing Bonnie, very interesting indeed. It certainly seems to be creeping more and more into the mainstream.

Hi Bonnie,

That's very interesting. An eye-catching article, to be sure. But what is this study's definition of "kinky sex"? Is it spanking, bondage, role-play, oral sex, doing it with the lights on, multiple partners? It doesn't surprise me that 86% are curious about the unknown, but the results would be more meaningful if they were broken down by specific kinks.

Hugs,
Hermione

Dear Bonnie, I have always thought that what some people call 'kinky sex', was normality. Only religious zealots, who pretend to have conservative thinking, condemn 'kinky sex'. Even thou themselves are hippocratics.

Kinky covers a lot of territory, but it still is an impressive number!

Isn't it funny we're in the majority after all this time thinking we are all alone.

With more books being published, and "kink" becoming "normal" even network tv shows such as the popular "Big Bang Theory" now show or talk about sex, spanking and other kinky activities regularly. We have come along way from Ricy and Lucy in separate beds....

Well, since people really have not changed all that much over time . . . you have to wonder IF your parents were also in the 86%? Egads! And, worse, were they also . . . spankos? And, while we are thinking about it, how about our grown children. Hmmmmm? Think they inherited your proclivities? Or did they see more than you knew and now outdo you? Sooooo many questions which will never [for me at least] have an answer. And if there were answers I do not want them. All under the rubric of Too Much Information.

Oh I believe it. I used to be in direct sales for an adult intimacy aid company. My most profitable party ever was hosted by a pastor's wife, only she was too embarrassed to have people over at her house to look so she passed the catalog around quietly and had me call the women for their orders. More than 20 women, sales of more than $1,400, and almost all of it was anal play and bdsm toys.

There's this stigma that keeps people perpetuating this myth of what is normal, but we are sexual beings and as much as people like what's familiar, they also like variety within the safety of that comfort zone. It's like how I eat at the same restaurant every Monday at lunch, but I've tried every thing on the menu. :)

I think variety or kinky is normal and people who do it the same time, the same day, the same way are the weird ones.
