A Spanko Flag

BDSM has a flag. LGBTQ+ groups now each have their own flags. Pot smokers have a flag. So do bands, beers, bodegas, and bears. But what about us? Spankos have no flag. I checked. Until now, that is. I propose the design above as a symbol for spanking enthusiasts.

I considered a swinging paddle or a crop or hairbrush, but there is no single implement that connects with all of us. I momentarily pondered multiple implements, but that would be a confusing mess. Besides, there is only one element common to all spankings and every spanko. So that's the one I selected.

The gray boundary represents ambiguity. We spankos occupy a unique spot in the borderlands of BDSM and yet simultaneously on the outer fringes of the vanilla domain.

What do you think? Have you an idea that's better than my tequila sunrise/double Jupiter/sunny side up/rose-colored shades/sunset on Tatooine/roasted posterior version? Either way, let's fly our colors proudly!

Bonnie, I fully agree with you that we need a flag or badge of some kind. I love your idea because the female bottom is what we have in common. My only thought is: do we need a symbol which we could brush off easily as something else if the person asking was not a spanko?

Sophie - That's a good point. I don't know whether a non-spanko would immediately recognize its significance in a different context. I am open to other alternative explanations (I admit mine are goofy) or different symbols.

I had an idea for this, many years ago. Three inverted hearts, set in a triangle, two at the top and one at the bottom, one in red one in amber and one in green to represent Tops, Switches and Bottoms. The background would be broad black and blue stripes, six of each, for obvious reasons. I have to be honest with you, Bonnie, I am not a great fan of your flag. It looks like the kind of thing a big Corporation would have, to fly outside its head office and put on its letters.

I forgot to say that the red amber and blue, in the inverted hearts, also represents the use of safe words. Indicating the consensual nature of our play, rather than it being one-sided abuse.

Prefectdt - Thank you for your feedback. I never claimed my flag was good, just that I think we need one. You clearly put more thought into this question than I did. If you create an image, I will post it.

I'm flattered that you would group my design with those for which big firms pay millions. :)

I have made a very rough mock up. I don't think it worked out as well in real life as it did in my imagination. I am no graphic designer. It is good to throw some ideas around, though. I will send it to you.

I am sure that any corporation would be chuffed to sport your flag. It is just not what I want to be carrying in the Spankos pride parade. :)

Love the idea of a flag Bonnie. Something I haven't thought of before.

I like it. You could even do jewelry with a similar symbol. It looks kind of like an infinity symbol (which I think some BDSM folks already use) with two ovals at the bottom. It could actually be quite discrete and non-obvious in its connotations. Though, maybe we should adopt a "who cares" attitude when it comes to being discrete? If we were to adopt a flag, isn't the whole point to be kind of "out there" with who we are and what we're into?

I agree we need a flag or symbol, bur Prefectdt's idea is excellent. I'll look forward to seeing it on his blog or yours.

Hugs,

Dan - I love the infinity connection! That hadn't occurred to me, but it's a great explanation. To the uninformed, maybe we're affiliated with the Planetary Society or the Theoretical Physicists Guild.

As for being out, many of us wish we could be out, but only to those who understand. I know that's not practical, but the somewhat ambiguous pin could be fun.
