I spend time scouring the internet for new spanking blogs to add to our MBS blogroll. I encounter a wide variety of different perspectives on the world of kink. When I encounter those that are abusive or exploitative, I mash the back button with all possible speed. Ditto the gory and messy ones. We don't need that. There are others that feature a kink so unusual that I cannot decipher what it is. Again, I pass. I'm looking for blogs about spankings, or at least mainly about spankings.
As a lifelong spanko, it wouldn't be fair for me to make light of other people's kinks, and I won't. But sometimes, I just don't understand. I found a site last week that is dedicated to Shibari Japanese rope bondage. OK, that's cool, I thought. The photos depicted naked women restrained, tied up really, using intricate rope patterns. It's obvious that considerable time and effort was invested in these complex loops and knots. The women didn't appear the least bit unhappy about their confinement so I assumed it's all consensual. So far, so good.
For a fleeting moment, I thought I might even like to try that. But then I spotted a problem. We arrived at the conclusion of the photo set and that was it. The next step was, I guess, to untie her and go home. Well, that would never do for me. I looked through some of the other pictures and they all ended with the woman immobilized and staring back at the camera.
So when does she get her spanking? It seems like they omitted the best part. Why have bondage and discipline without the discipline? But what if she doesn't want to be spanked, you ask? What if she just likes getting tied in knots? Possible, I suppose. In any case, I shouldn't impose my own biases on others.
I showed Randy and told him that if he spent an hour tying me up and then just let me loose, I would be very disappointed. In retrospect, that might have been the wrong thing to say to him. But really. If I'm going to link a site, they need to include some spankings! Is that asking too much?
For the sake of research, I googled Shibari spanking. Most of the recommended sites were clearly porn. Not that that's terrible, but I was looking for blogs. If anyone knows of a Shibari blog with spankings, or vice versa, I'd love to give them a link.

Oh, that is a different culture and of course different kind of perversions, which are appropriate for Japanese mentality. Sometimes I think that common sensual spanking is too soft for their imagination, so they even do not try to cultivate that and to mix that with their traditional deviations. I think you know at least two cool Japanese spanking sites, and you may notice that even traditional spanking scenes look pretty odd in their performances.
BR - Thanks for sharing your perspective. You raise a possibility I wouldn't have considered. What if spankings aren't kinky enough to include in their play? That seems puzzling to me, but I agree that Japanese sex culture includes some very different elements (schoolgirl panties sold in vending machines?). I recognize that I should not apply my cultural assumptions in other contexts. But sometimes, I just don't understand.
I think that could be explained by historical roots of spanking. In general that is European kind of punishment raised at least from Ancient Greece schools and temples (end then evolved in Christian culture). And of course in all the times there were a people that could enjoy it even being punished (of course if we are talking about such kinds of punishment like belting, birching etc - not more severe penalty). At the same time the common set of judical punishments in Asian countries, and particulary in Japan, was so brutal that there were no place to enjoy. Hence they got some other traditions of masochistic culture which looks strange for us.
BR - Thank you for that explanation.
Interesting comments. I had never really thought about how culture may play a part in kink. It amazes me how many different kinks there are out there and spanking may or may not feature.

I'm constantly reminding myself that each person's experience is different. I have a feel in my own mind about what it would be like to be in that other person's position, but my mind doesn't work like there. So, it's only an approximation.
But I know from experience that there are many in our community who are turned on just by the restraint. For Shibari, I suspect there's also the element of aesthetics, which seems to be very prevalent in Japanese culture. The question is: what can you create given these tools? (rope, girl)
If the girl has an emotional response to restraint anything more (spanking) just isn't necessary for completion.
It seems like a very creative outlet for kink, although a lot of skill is needed for those knots. Might there be a community college night course on the basics?
Hugs,
Hermione
Roz - I too find myself surprised sometimes.
RP - I don't mean to judge people, their culture, or how they define their kink. Heaven knows the world is full of people who think consensual adult spanking is weird. I can accept that this is what some people like without necessarily understanding. The search for new spanking blogs rolls on...
Hermione - It's possible. The final exam grade might depend upon whether the tied person can escape.
